Tony Lopez

#43 Mazda Miata, sponsored by California Driving Adventures

Subaru Impreza WRX

AC Cobra, BMW M5 and whatever car carried me to my last win

Tony brings to California Driving Adventures his problem solving and "outside the box" approach that has made him a successful, respected and accomplished police officer and police manager with the Mountain View Police Department.

Tony started racing in 1991 with the Sports Car Club of America. Tony won his first championship in 1995. He followed this up with championships in 1996 (2), 1997 and 2001. He has twenty-four victories in eighty-four starts. These have come in five different classes.

He teaches pursuit and defensive driving to police officers, recruits and civilian police employees. He has been a driving awareness instructor for Driving Dynamics and a performance driving instructor for Donutz Motorsports, Tracquest, and the National Auto Sport Association. He has also has coached and instructed race drivers on a one on one basis. Tony has developed team-building exercises based on a small team maneuvering a car through various obstacles (including blindfolded). These exercises require communication, resources assessment, planning, teamwork and the ability to quickly develop and implement a plan.

In 1993 he founded Racing 4 A Cause. Racing 4 A Cause is a program designed to teach kids self-esteem, keep them off drugs, in school and out of gangs through participation in the exciting world of motorsports. As a police lieutenant he has seen what can happen to kids when they have lost hope or lack opportunities. He has also seen what can happen when kids get "turned on" by a positive challenge and how they can accomplish more than they ever dreamed.

"Many people see racing as an individual endeavor. They could not be more wrong. Sure the driver is the one in control of the car, but before the driver took to the track the team prepared the car, the team drivers gave each other tips, the team manager planned racing strategy, the coach helped get the driver's mind "in the game" and numerous support people planned logistics and coordinated schedules. These same attributes can be applied to successful team-building efforts," commented Tony.
